U.S. Math Statistics: Current State of Math Skills in the States

U.S. students are losing ground in mathematics skills when compared to international students. A recent study found U.S high school students ranking 31st out of 65 nations. In their first attempts at international exams, students from Shanghai recently outscored the rest of the world’s students. U.S. students ranked 25th on the same test. U.S. students are lagging behind many of their counterparts in many countries in Europe and Asia. In 2007, the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP), developed an exam which is considered the gold standard in testing. Only 32 percent of U.S. students tested at the proficient level in mathematics. Only one state, Massachusetts, had over half its students testing at proficient levels. The U.S. is also falling behind other advanced democracies like Turkey and Spain, in producing young workers with degrees in mathematics and science.

Making sure our students excel in mathematics and science is crucial to maintaining a technological lead in America. Many fields rely on workers proficient in advanced mathematics skills. Research, finance, engineering and business all require mathematical training. It will be those trained in math that address the pressing issues of our day.

The tracking of epidemics, the development of new energy resources, risk management, economic projection and cyber security all rely on workers that have mastered mathematics. In the business world these skills are necessary for portfolio analysis, statistical analysis, design studies, and software design and testing. The insurance industry relies on mathematically trained actuaries. Laboratories employ mathematicians in many capacities. Most medical jobs require these skills. Nurses use them in dosage calculations. All medical, dental and pharmacy programs require potential students to be proficient in mathematics through calculus. Our nation, our economy and our students need excellent training in mathematics to succeed.

Solving this problem will not be simple, but surely steps can be taken to turn this trend around. Finding innovative ways to encourage students to learn mathematics might be a start. There are many programs available both on computers and even smart phones or tablets that can help motivate and teach students. Teachers that are successfully teaching these skills need to be identified and rewarded. Their methods should be followed in less successful classrooms. Parents can encourage their students to excel. Sometimes enlisting the help of a math tutor can help a student achieve success in a particular skill that encourages them to continue to study math with confidence. Students can help themselves. Where there is a will, there is still a way. Many educators are concerned about this issue. There are many free resources on the web available to help students and parents of all levels. There are also scholarships available to students excelling in mathematics and science. Our young people need to be aware of the opportunities and possibilities open to them if they apply themselves to understanding mathematics.

Enabling our students to succeed in mathematics is the best choice for the future of our country economically and technologically. It also ensures that these young people have the best chance at thriving in the global economy.

Multi-Combination licence (MC) – Covers multi-combination vehicles like Road Trains and B-Double Vehicles – trucks with two trailers linked by a 5th wheel. MC licencesalso permit the twoholders to vehicles in the HC class and lower.

Forklift Licence (LF and LO) – Load-shifting forklift, or LF licencespermit the holder to drive a powered industrial forklift truck equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage attached a pair of forkarms, or other attachment. Load-shifting order picker, or LO licences permit the holder to drive a powered industrial truck of a type where the driver’s platform raises up with the forks and or load.

Bobcat Licence –Otherwise known as a Skid Steer Loader licence, these allow the holder to drive bobcats, and ‘conduct civil construction skid steer loader operations (RIIMPO318B).

Bus and Coach Authority Licence – Bus and coach licences permit the holder to drive public passenger vehicles such as a coach, mini bus, shuttleand route bus.

Policy Aside, Can Online Colleges Save Money?

In between any news article you might read about record-high debt for student loans, you may also see reports about differences in education policy between the two presidential candidates.

In the war for favorable media coverage, President Obama seems to hold the advantage. And more specifics, too: as the incumbent, Obama has got the most current track record on education policy. Add to that the seemingly positive comments from those rare officials in higher education who dare to offer an opinion, and you’ve got an arsenal of data for that portion of Obama’s campaign.

But what about the cost of education itself? Independent from financial aid or the job market or student debt?

What about free courses, at prestigious institutions of higher learning? That recent trend goes against a seemingly inevitable rise in the cost of education.

Could an increased emphasis on learning at online colleges help to stabilize the cost of education? It’s too early to tell, but that question is worth investigating, according to College of Southern Nevada instructor Wayne Littlejohn.

Littlejohn explains that up front, the cost of creating an online course can be higher than teaching in a traditional classroom. The instructor needs to create digital content, which can be time-consuming. Especially for the less-savvy users of state-of-the-art technology.

“But once those materials are uploaded and available, the instructor could have an easier time than one who teaches in a physical classroom,” says Littlejohn.

Less time spent on physical logistics, such as commuting, could mean more time for discussion and analysis of student work. And lower costs for everyone. Suddenly gas prices might seem less important than making sure that files are properly uploaded from home.

Rather than asking the candidates solely about federal programs for student aid, how great would it be to learn more about their positions on accredited online colleges, and other avenues for earning a degree or diploma from home.

U.S. SAT Scores: Averages and Statistics

Since the SAT first debuted in 1926, millions of high school students in the U.S. and around the world have completed the test. The SAT is managed by the College Board and is designed to measure literary and writing skills needed for college. The SAT is one of the most important measures that colleges and universities use to determine admission. The weight and importance of the SAT lead to some schools offering SAT prep courses and other methods of preparation, like individual tutoring.


Over time the format and scale of the SAT has changed, so comparing scores is a bit difficult. Recent score results have shown a drop in several sections of the test, particularly reading. Some researchers attribute this decrease to the fact that more students are taking the exam. While reading and writing scores have dropped in recent years, math scores have remained fairly steady.

One reason that so many more students are taking the SAT is because many school districts have begun offering the test for free and give it during the school day. Since there is normally a fifty dollar fee this is a great resource for low-income students. This also eliminates the process of having to register for a test and get to a testing location, something that can be a legitimate obstacle for students without parental support. While making the test more accessible is generally thought to be a very positive thing, one effect is that all students take the test whether or not they have done any form of SAT prep. The resulting lower scores in reading and writing are not particularly surprising.

Another factor that may contribute to the dip in SAT scores is that more students who do not speak English as a first language are taking the exam. Reflected in the lower reading and writing scores is the fact that often ESL students have frequently not gotten the academic help or attention needed to catch up in these subjects. Recent scores suggest that less students are well-prepared for college. This is a fact that should not only be alarming but also serve as a call to action.

Research has revealed that students who take advanced placement courses in high school, score higher on the SAT. This statistic is not particularly surprising, but it should encourage educators to consider how to create rigorous standards for all students and accommodate students in a manner that helps them reach these standards. Teacher expectations have shown to play a significant role on student achievement and this likely have an affect on students in advanced placement courses to begin with.

Giving students the tools necessary to succeed on the SAT is something that all teachers should take seriously. The SAT is not only a benchmark for the likelihood of an individual student’s success in college, but also an indicator of the U.S. education system at large. Trends in recent years suggest that the nation has plenty of work to do in preparing students to be college ready.
